Our History

“The Hare & Ransome reputation for excellence, craftsmanship and customer care is immensely and personally important to me.”

Andy Robson, Managing Director

“I am really proud of the long Hare & Ransome history, and am the fifth generation of my family to be a joiner! The company traces back to 1918 when two friends, Alf Hare, my great-great uncle, and George Ransome started a joinery business in Heslington Road, York. Alf’s brother-in-law John William was already a joiner in Helmsley, in what is now the Black Swan Hotel and his son Bert worked as a cabinet maker on the famous Pullman train carriages in York. Bert’s sons Cyril and Fred Jackson continued the tradition, joining Alf until after WW2 when the family firm passed to the brothers.”

“The Company continued to expand through the 1950s and 1960s with the next generation of Jacksons, Paul, Stephen and Robert. At this time the joiners also doubled as the local funeral director making the coffins while their wives embalmed the deceased! I learnt the skills and craftsmanship of joinery working alongside my Grandad Fred, before going to college, and returned to the business full time in 1987 – I have been there ever since.”
